The family's journey in the maple syrup industry began in the 1970s when Kirstin van den Berg and her brother, Chris Cordes, started collecting sap in Chisago County as children. This annual award by the Cook County U of M Extension recognizes the contributions of a farm family to the local agricultural and food landscape of Cook County. The award will be presented to family members Kirstin, Greg, Chris, Calvin, Jim, and Marianne during the Fisherman's Picnic on the Harbor Park stage on August 5. She is passionate about young people and providing them with experiences that will support them to navigate through to their adulthood, and the importance of everyone having the opportunity to connect with the outdoors.Sawtooth Mountain Maple Syrup Company has been named the Cook County Farm Family of the Year for 2023 in Cook County, Minnesota. She then spent 2 years in Brighton, wild swimming and working at Skills Builder, supporting teachers and youth organisations to provide opportunities for young people to develop essential skills such as leadership, staying positive and teamwork.Īt Jamie’s Farm, Alicia uses her personal experience to guide her therapeutic horse sessions and activities with young people. This, alongside volunteering at Jamie’s Farm in the holidays, confirmed that working with young people was where she wanted to be, but in a setting outside of mainstream classroom teaching. After studying Psychology at Bristol university, she taught secondary Science in the South Wales valleys for 3 years. Alicia grew up in Herefordshire surrounded by horses and dogs, and has always been passionate about sharing this beautiful part of the world and the calm that it offers.
